Temporary Health Insurance Options for Utah Families

If you or your family only need insurance for a short period of time, consider applying for a temporary health insurance policy.  Typically these policies cover you or your family for up to six months, are easy and fast to apply for.  But, there are some differences you should know about before you apply.

Differences Between Temporary Insurance and Permanent Insurance

Temporary policies typically don't cover pre-existing conditions.  Most temporary health insurance plans don't cover anything until you reach the deductible.  This means that you are responsible for all expenses (including office visits and prescriptions) until you reach your deductible.  Once you meet your deductible, the benefits kick in.

Temporary plans are an excellent solution if you know that you will have a different insurance option through an employer or college in the next six to twelve months.

If you feel that this is the right solution for you, request an instant temporary health insurance quote.

(Complete the short application to see pricing.  If you decide to purchase the coverage, you can enter a credit card number or checking information and print your cards and policy documents immediately.)

Different Utah Companies Rate Their Plans Differently, for Families

As a family, it's good to know how each company rates their plans.

SelectHealth

Some companies rate according to you family status (single, two party, family).  So, if you have three people, you are considered a family, just the same as a family who had seven people.  For this reason, companies who use this rating system usually aren't competitive for families of three or four people.  SelectHealth uses this family status rating system.

In addition, SelectHealth rates their plans according to the oldest person applying.  So, if a 48 year old man is applying with his 19 year old daughter, he will be charged at a "two-party" rate under a 48 year old.  This is the same rate he would pay if he was applying with a 48 year old wife instead.  Depending on the ages of the people applying, SelectHealth may or may not be the right choice.

On the other hand, if you have a family of five or six people, or a family with adults that are close in age, SelectHealth's rates will probably be very competitive.

Altius, HumanaOne, Blue Cross, and Assurant Health

These four companies have an age based, and per person rating system.  If you are a family of three people, and you apply to one of the four companies above, you and your spouse will be charged separately based on your individual ages.  In addition, you will only be charged for one child.  These companies usually have more favorable rates for spouse who are significantly different in age, and have only one or two children.

Assurant and HumanaOne charge per child, with no limit, so if you have three or more children, you may find that these companies do not have the best rates for your family.

The Bottom Line

It's important to consider your families ages and how many children you have, and find out how each insurer will rate your plan according to your family status.  Doing your research up front can save you hundreds, if not thousands of dollars in the long run.
